Summary

Contestant of Nigeria’s first Albinism Beauty Pageant, Kofo Komolafe, uses the beauty contest to inspire others with albinism, challenge limiting stereotypes, and advocate for self-confidence and community empowerment.

Albinism refers to a range of disorders that result from a reduction or absence of the melanin pigment. These disorders vary in severity and often cause white skin, light hair, and vision problems. The most common cause of albinism is an interruption in the functioning of the enzyme tyrosinase. An estimated one in 70 people carries the genes associated with albinism.

This year, the first Person with Albinism Pageant, organised by Misty Glam Company, will occur in August 2025. The pageant is a bold statement that beauty exists in every skin tone and condition. Contestants include inspiring young women who challenge stereotypes and redefine standards of beauty. One contestant is Kofo Komolafe, who shares her motivations and dreams with Naija Feminists Media.

Meet Kofo Komolafe– Model and Person with Albinism Inclusion Advocate

Why did you decide to become a model?

I decided to become a model because I know I can do it. If I do it, other people with albinism will know that they can also do it. Many people with albinism always have this fear that they cannot do it.

What misconception about albinism would you like to change?

I would like to change people’s mentality. People feel like persons with albinism cannot do this or that, and with all this, I believe I personally can change their mentality around it.

What message or advice do you have for young girls?

The message I have for them is to build their self-confidence.

What goals are you working toward in the next five years?

I want to have my own community where I can teach people with albinism to chase their dreams without any fear.
