Summary
Mojisola Meranda has resigned as Speaker amid a leadership crisis and was re-elected as Deputy Speaker, while Mudashiru resumed the Speaker’s role after being nominated by Noheem. Lawmakers praised Mojisola’s leadership and adherence to party rules, and Mudashiru’s return reflects a major shift in the Lagos Assembly’s leadership dynamics.
On Monday, Mar. 3, 2025, the first female speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda Lasbat, announced her resignation during a plenary session at the House of Assembly in Lagos.
Mojisola, who represents Apapa Constituency I, announced her resignation after a reported meeting with high-ranking members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, aimed at resolving the leadership crisis that had unsettled the Assembly for nearly two months.
Shortly after, lawmakers unanimously re-elected her as Deputy Speaker, a position she previously held before her brief tenure as Speaker. In the same plenary session, the Lagos State House of Assembly reinstated Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker seven weeks after his removal over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
His re-election on Monday followed the resignation of Mojisola Meranda, who had been serving as Speaker since Jan. 2025.
Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency I, reclaimed the Speaker’s seat after Noheem Adams, a former Majority Leader representing Eti-Osa Constituency I, nominated him. He was subsequently sworn in during the session.
Obasa, a longtime member of the Assembly since 2007, previously held the Speaker’s position from June 2015 until his removal in January 2025. His return to the top legislative position becomes controversial, given that he was to be probed for gross misconduct and abuse of office and was subsequently sworn out by members of the House of Assembly, albeit in his absence.
Meanwhile, women continue to be underrepresented in political positions. Lawmakers, however, commended Meranda for her leadership style, her role in maintaining peace within the House, and her adherence to party directives.
