Summary
Naija Feminists Media will host an X Space on August 22, 2025, to discuss Nigeria’s Reserved Seats Bill and its role in advancing women’s political representation.
As Nigeria moves closer to amending its constitution on inclusion, conversations around gender equity in politics are gaining momentum. On August 22, 2025, at 5 p.m.(WAT), Naija Feminists Media will host an X Space on the topic “The Importance of the Reserved Seats Bill, Institutionalising it and the Way Forward.”
Women currently hold less than 5 per cent of federal legislative seats in Nigeria, far below the population share, showing persistent underrepresentation in governance and leadership.
The Reserved Seats Bill proposes one additional seat for women in Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) across the Senate and House of Representatives. This would create a total of 74 exclusive federal seats. The bill reserves three seats for women at the state level in every State House of Assembly, adding 108 new seats nationwide.
The X Space will feature a rich panel of voices, including journalist Oyeyemi Abolade and writer, feminist, and Founder of MyselfDefense NG, Kosisochukwu Charity Ani. It will also host Augusta Yaakugh-Shahin, a lawyer, and Executive Director of Lex Initiative for Rights, Advocacy, and Development, as well as Chikas Kumle, a politician and Executive Director at Women Development Monitoring Initiative.
The virtual discussion will analyse the bill’s provisions and implications and examine the steps needed to institutionalise it as part of building a more inclusive and equitable political system.
Join the conversation live on Twitter on August 22 by 5 p.m. and be part of the dialogue shaping women’s political future in Nigeria.
