Summary

The National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) has condemned the assault of former NAWOJ President Ladi Balla by NRC Managing Director Kayode Opeifa. The council is demanding a public apology and stronger protections for women against intimidation and gender-based violence.

The National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) has expressed displeasure over the reported assault of Comrade Ladi Balla, immediate past President of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), by the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Mr. Kayode Opeifa.

According to reports, Mr. Kayode reportedly intimidated, dehumanised, and publicly humiliated Comrade Ladi in the course of her work as a journalist. NCWS National President, Princess Edna D. D. Azura, confirmed that she had spoken directly with her, whose account of the incident aligned with media reports.

In a strongly worded statement issued on August 30, 2025, NCWS condemned the act, describing it as not only an assault on Ladi Balla but also an attack on the dignity of Nigerian women.

“It is unacceptable that a woman, carrying out her legitimate duty as a journalist, should be subjected to such degrading treatment,” the statement reads.

The council demanded an unreserved public apology from Kayode Opeifa, as well as a clear commitment from the NRC to prevent future acts of intimidation or gender-based violence.

“Nigerian women will not remain silent in the face of oppression, harassment, or any attempt to undermine our role in national development.”

Reaffirming its commitment to defending the rights of women and girls, NCWS called on government agencies, civil society, and the media to stand together in ensuring women are treated with respect, fairness, and dignity across the country.
