Summary

This week’s NFM Digest highlights impactful advocacy, tragic loss, misinformation, legal action against domestic abuse, and historic wins in entertainment. These stories showcase the wide-ranging issues shaping public discourse today.

From powerful feminist advocacy to heartbreaking news and global entertainment highlights, this week brought a wide range of headlines that sparked conversations.

Here are the top five stories that stood out, including NFM’s radio appearance in Ibadan and Ayra Starr’s record-breaking BET nominations.

  1. Naija Feminists Media Takes Advocacy to Crest FM, Ibadan

As part of its mandate to promote gender equality in Nigeria and mainstream feminism, NFM, represented by its founder, Simbiat Bakare, addressed misconceptions about feminism to Ibadan residents. She urged that women should not be pressured to engage in marriage or childbirth or forced to justify their choices.

  1. Tragic incident as teen commit suicide over JAMB score

A nineteen-year-old, Opesusi Faith Timilehin, has reportedly committed suicide on May 12, 2025, after receiving her UTME score from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). According to reports, Faith was reportedly heartbroken after finding out her UTME score was 190. She believed it was far lower than her previous year’s result and feared it wouldn’t secure her a place in the university course she had applied for. Meanwhile, celebrities like Ayesha Yesufu and Kate Henshaw slam JAMB for the mass failure.

  1.  Halle Bailey Granted Restraining Order Against DDG, Over Domestic Violence

American singer and actress Halle Bailey has been granted a domestic violence restraining order against her ex-boyfriend, rapper and YouTuber Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr., popularly known as DDG.

The Los Angeles judge’s ruling followed Halle’s detailed reports of repeated verbal and physical abuse during and after their relationship.  The court also barred him from possessing any weapons and scheduled a follow-up hearing in June.

  1. It looks real, but it is not: The AI-generated image shaming independent women

On our weekly fact-check, A viral image of a woman alone on her 50th birthday is making rounds online, posted by an X user  from a post on Facebook by  Fahim Ahmed, with claims she has “no husband, no kids, and made the cake herself.”

At first glance, it is sympathetic. But the image is AI-generated; as such, it is misleading. However, the post was designed to be a clickbait to a link to purchase a hoodie that is irrelevant to the image.

5. Ayra Starr Leads with Three Nominations at the 2025 BET Awards

Nigerian music sensation Ayra Starr has made history as the most-nominated African artist at the upcoming 2025 BET Awards, scoring three impressive nominations. Ayra Starr received nominations in three major categories: Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Best New Artist, and Best International Act.

Whether in media, music, or moments of crisis, this week’s stories reflect the power of visibility, accountability, and the growing voices shaping today’s narratives. As always, NFM continues to spotlight the stories that matter.
