As part of its ongoing media advocacy to advance gender equality, Naija Feminist Movement (NFM) is convening a critical conversation on the theme: “Safeguarding Girls from Digital Predators.” The virtual discussion will take place on Friday, April 25, 2025, at 5 PM WAT via X (Twitter) Spaces.
Digital predators, also known as online predators, are individuals who exploit, manipulate, or abuse children and teenagers through the Internet. These perpetrators target girls through social media platforms, messaging apps, and online games, hiding behind fake identities and using psychological tactics to groom and abuse their victims.
According to recent data, nearly 500,000 online predators are active daily, targeting mostly girls between the ages of 12 and 15. Their strategies include grooming, emotional manipulation, blackmail, and harassment, often leading to long-term emotional trauma for victims.
NFM recognises that digital spaces, while offering opportunities for connection and learning, can also expose girls to significant harm. Therefore, this space commemorating Girls in ICT Day is dedicated to exploring how we can protect and safeguard girls in the digital world.
The X Space will feature a panel of experts and advocates committed to girls’ safety in digital spaces. Gladys Matthew, Esq., and Deborah Orji will provide legal insights. Kosisochukwu Charity Ani and Franca Okeh will provide gender-focused perspectives, while Oyeyemi Abolade will share strategies for digital safety. Elfrida Chinkwita of Malawi Broadcasting Corporation will bring a media lens to the discussion, and Silverline Wiro will speak on psychosocial support and the role of social work in protecting vulnerable girls.
This X Space aims to raise awareness, inspire action, and provide a platform for collective advocacy against digital exploitation. Your voice and insights are of immense value to this conversation.
Let’s come together to decode the tactics of online predators and build stronger safeguards for girls across Africa and beyond. Join the conversation here.
