Summary
Naija Feminist Media will host an X Space on February 14 at 5 PM to discuss the dangers of Female Genital Mutilation and ways to end it.
In commemoration of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), observed on February 6, Naija Feminist Media (NFM) will host an X Space discussion on February 14 at 5pm. This event aims to spotlight the dangers of FGM and advocate for its eradication.
Nigeria accounts for 19.5% of the global prevalence of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), with an alarming mean age of just 1.7 years for victims. Despite global efforts to end the practice, over 20 million Nigerian women and girls live with the brutal scars of this harmful tradition.
FGM is a human rights violation that causes lifelong physical and psychological harm. It is recognised by the United Nations as a non-medical, violent practice that leads to chronic pain, infections, infertility, and childbirth complications, thereby increasing maternal and infant mortality rates.
The X Space, moderated by NFM’s Partnership Officer, Nkechi Igwebuike, will feature a panel of women’s rights activists, FGM survivors, journalists, and legal practitioners. Themed “Beyond Policy: Eliminating the Reappearing Head of Female Genital Mutilation,” the discussion will explore the cultural and policy dimensions of FGM and strategies for its eradication.
NFM encourages the public to join the conversation at 5 PM on February 14 and engage with experts and survivors as they share their experiences and insights. Naija Feminist Media remains committed to leveraging media platforms to educate the public on harmful traditional practices that endanger women’s lives.
