Simbiat Bakare, investigative journalist and founder of Naija Feminists Media, has been selected as one of the 18 fellows for the 2025 Women in Journalism/Gender Reporting Fellowship. The Africa Foundation for Young Media Professionals (AFYMP) hosts the media programme.
The AFYMP fellowship is designed to strengthen and promote a vibrant, independent African media by empowering young journalists across the continent. The foundation, a pan-African non-profit headquartered in Nigeria, aims to raise the standard of media practice by focusing on the next generation of media professionals.
Each year, AFYMP runs specialised media fellowships. For 2025, the foundation streamlined its offerings to three areas. These include Disability and Inclusion Reporting, Campus Journalism with a focus on ethics, fact-checking, and data-driven reporting, as well as Women in Journalism and Gender Reporting.
The selected fellows will participate in a four to six-month programme, beginning with an intensive workshop. This is followed by a mentoring phase in which fellows are guided by top-tier media experts and expected to publish stories that reflect their learning.
Other fellows in the Women in Journalism/Gender Reporting category include: Ayobamiji Komolafe, Catherine Tembo, Omolola Afolabi, Elizabeth Akande, Mashudu Revele, and Aminat Miskila.
Simbiat has authored several women-centric reports, including the award-winning Odalo story, the state of women-owned businesses in Nigeria, and how domestic violence displaced a woman from her community.
