Summary: Nigerian farmer and agribusiness advocate Chimdi Ibeawuchi publicly declared that government policy failures, insecurity, and institutional neglect have made agriculture unsustainable for farmers in Nigeria.

Chimdi Ibeawuchi, a Nigerian farmer and agribusiness advocate, has called out the Nigerian government for decades of policy failures that have made farming economically unviable.

In a post she made on her official X account on April 7, 2026, she stated that investing in Nigerian agriculture had become one of her greatest mistakes.

“Nigerian Government will do everything in agriculture except solve problems,” she stated.

The Nigerian Farmer named specific institutional failures driving her conclusion. She stated that for over 20 years, farmers have suffered a seasonal glut in egg production because they cannot individually afford machinery for egg pasteurisation.

She stated that the government proposed a NEGPRO scheme in response to farmers’ complaints, then proceeded to do the opposite of what was agreed. She further stated that high electricity and gas prices make egg powder production in Nigeria uncompetitive globally, pushing companies to import rather than purchase Nigerian raw materials.

On state governments, she stated that governors have reduced agricultural policy to distributing fertiliser as a political tool while refusing to build or sustain critical infrastructure, including dams, animal health and safety systems, and farmer training programmes.

Chimdi also stated that the Central Bank of Nigeria, under former Governor Godwin Emefiele, refused to allow the Bank of Agriculture to function as intended, cutting off a critical financing lifeline for farmers. She expressed that growing insecurity, combined with these policy failures, has left farmers with little to no incentive to continue or expand their businesses.

Reacting to her post, other Nigerians expressed sadness and shared their own experiences with government policy failure. X user @officialsaskay tweeted, “This is so sad. In what sector is the government thriving nitori Olorun?”

Similarly, another X user @islemonjuice shared what difficulties she is facing, stating: “This is why we produce our day-old chicks too to avoid situations like this. We have clients from Ghana, Togo and Cotonou coming to buy eggs. This is why I rarely post our products online to avoid disappointing people.”
