Kafilat Ogbara, the House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development chairperson, is urging national support for a bill proposing 182 new legislative seats exclusively for women.
Kafilat Ogbara, chairperson of the House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, has called for National support for a bill proposing 182 new legislative seats dedicated solely to women.
Kafilat, who represents Kosofe Federal Constituency, Lagos State, made this call on July 29, 2025, while briefing the media in Abuja.
She stated that despite their significant presence, the current low number of women in elective positions does not reflect well on a nation that champions inclusive governance. She called upon all stakeholders, including government officials, civil society organisations, and citizens, to support this crucial bill.
Kafilat stressed the urgency of dismantling historical barriers that have hindered women’s participation in politics and governance. She further noted that this proposed legislation is not merely a legal undertaking, but a courageous effort to build a more inclusive democracy for Nigeria.
“Together, let us champion this cause and pave the way for a more equitable Nigeria-one that values and amplifies women’s voices for inclusive growth and national development,” she said.
She further detailed the bill’s provisions, explaining that it proposes one additional seat per state, including the Federal Capital Territory, to be reserved for women in both chambers of the National Assembly. Additionally, it recommends three new reserved seats for women in each state House of Assembly.
“This bill is not just about increasing numbers, it’s about ensuring that women’s perspectives, needs, and rights are reflected in policymaking,” she stated.
