Nigerian para-lifters Rita Ferdinand, Esther Nworgu, and Rukayat Opeyemi Ajiboye have made the nation proud by winning gold, silver, and bronze medals respectively at the ongoing 11th World Para Powerlifting Championships in Cairo, Egypt.
Rita delivered a stellar performance on October 11 2025, lifting an impressive 153kg to win gold in the women’s up to 79kg category.
Her triumph added to Nigeria’s growing medal tally at the championship, following Esther’s silver finish in the 50kg category and Opeyemi’s bronze in the same class. Esther narrowly missed the gold to Venezuela’s Clara Fuentes, who edged her out in a tightly contested event.
Reacting to the athletes’ success, the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, praised their determination and spirit.
“Our athletes continue to make us proud, showing the world that Nigeria is a force to be reckoned with in para powerlifting. Their bright start in Cairo reflects the depth of talent, discipline, and dedication that define Nigerian sports,” Olopade said.
The 11th World Para Powerlifting Championships, which runs from October 9 to 18, 2025, is a historic event as it marks the first edition ever hosted in Africa. This milestone underscores the continent’s growing influence in adaptive sports.
