Summary
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued an alert to Nigerians to discontinue the use of Nivea black-and-white Invisible Roll-on deodorant. A specific batch has been noted to contain harmful ingredients that can harm the reproductive system.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued an urgent alert concerning the recall of Nivea BLACK & WHITE Invisible Roll-on deodorant, 50ml, bearing batch number 93529610. The recall, initiated by the European Union’s Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX) in Brussels on Oct. 30, 2024, emphasises serious health risks tied to this product.
The Nivea deodorant, designed for 48-hour protection in African climates, has been found to contain 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl propionaldehyde (BMHCA), a chemical prohibited in cosmetics due to its documented reproductive risks. According to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), it has been proven that BMHCA exposure can impair fetal health and pose dangers to the reproductive system. In addition, users may experience skin irritation and burns, making the product a significant concern for women, particularly those who are pregnant or planning families.
Therefore, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has urged importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to avoid the importation, distribution, and sale of this specific batch, manufactured in Germany. The agency has advised all who possess this product to discontinue use and report it to the nearest NAFDAC office for safe disposal.
However, in a press release shared with Naija Feminists Media by Chidiebere Onuorha, representative of Chain Reactions Africa, the PR agency for Beiersdorf Nivea Consumer Products Nig. Ltd, “the flagged batch has not been marketed in Nigeria.”
“We wish to assure our esteemed customers that the Batch No. 93529610 in question has not been marketed in Nigeria and thus never recalled by Beirsdorf, the owner of NIVEA brand, as the legal manufacturer. The batch in question, in fact, expired in January 2022 and was hence at the time fully complaint with the then valid European cosmetic regulation.
“As a responsible corporate citizen, Beiersdorf is working collaboratively with NAFDAC to safeguard the interests of Nigerian consumers,” the press release partly reads.
