Nollywood’s Actresses Lead 2024 Box Office Rankings

The 2024 Nollywood box office rankings announced by FilmOne show the dominance of female actresses, with Funke Akindele’s Everybody Loves Jenifa leading the pack, followed by Wunmi Toriola, Toyin Abraham, and other top-grossing stars reflecting the growing influence of women in the industry

Nigeria’s leading movie distribution company, FilmOne, announced the 2024 box office rankings on January 28 via their Instagram account. The ranking shows Nollywood’s most successful films and actors over the past year.

Funke Akindele secured the top spot with her record-breaking film Everybody Loves Jenifa, which grossed an impressive N1.125 billion, solidifying her status as Nollywood’s frontrunner.

Wunmi Toriola followed closely with Queen Lateefah, earning N365M and taking second place. Toyin Abraham’s Alakada: Bad and Boujee came in third with N266. Tomike Adeoye’s Ajosepo and Eniola Ajao’s Beast of Two Worlds: Ajakaju claimed the fourth and fifth spots, grossing N257M and N253M, respectively.

Other actresses who made the top ten include Kehinde Bankole for Funmilayo Ransome Kuti (N222M), Adunni Ade for Lakatabu (N202M), Uche Nwaefuna for Thin Line, Silent Intruder, and The Betrayed (N186M), Regina Daniels for The Waiter (N185M), and Gbugbemi Ejeye for Farmer’s Bride (N167M).

Omotunde Adebowale David and Juliana Olayode topped the list of the highest-grossing actresses in supporting roles, earning N1.125 billion for their roles in Everybody Loves Jenifa.

They were followed by Mercy Aigbe for Thin Line (N764M), Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori for Muri & Ko, Queen Lateefah, and Wives of Strike: The Uprising (N628M), Bisola Aiyeola for Ajosepo and Muri & Ko (N393M), and Nancy Isime for Muri & Ko (N365M). 

Fathia Balogun earned N318M for Beast of Two Worlds and Blacksmith; Bimbo Akintola made N278M for Beast of Two Worlds and A Night in 2005; Adeyela Adebola grossed N266M for Alakada: Bad and Boujee and American Japa, Bimbo Ademoye took in N252M for Alakada: Bad and Boujee and Home and Away, and Chioma Akpotha earned N222M for Wives on Strike and Ghetto Love Story.

The 2024 box office rankings highlight Nollywood’s growing influence, recognising the impact of leading actresses and setting a precedent for emerging stars in the industry.

As Nollywood continues to gain recognition locally and internationally, it is inspiring to see women dominating the industry with great momentum. The recognition of these top-grossing actresses shows female actors’ increasing visibility and prominence in Nollywood, inspiring future generations to break barriers and achieve cinematic excellence.
