Summary: At the 30th Ordinary General Assembly of the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), Senator Oluremi Tinubu was recognised for her contributions towards women’s and children’s welfare.
The Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), on Sunday, February 15, 2026, recognised Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her contributions to girls’ and women’s welfare. The recognition was received on her behalf by Nana Shettima, the wife of the Vice-President, at the 30th Ordinary General Assembly of the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), held at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Initially named the Organisation of African First Ladies against HIV/AIDS (OAFLA), and founded in 2002, the organisation worked, intending to be a united voice for Africa’s most vulnerable citizens, women and children living with and affected by HIV and AIDS. Over the years, OAFLA evolved to become a platform that offers continent-wide leadership and advocacy in HIV and a broad range of maternal and child health interventions. It leverages the position of First Ladies of Africa to advocate for policies that make health services accessible and laws that boost women’s and youth empowerment.
The forum’s chairperson, Dr Fatima Maada Bio, the First Lady of Sierra Leone, commented on Senator Oluremi’s contributions towards women’s and children’s welfare in Nigeria and beyond. She also recognised her role as a core advocate for initiatives in promoting women.
The 30th Ordinary General Assembly identified the urgent need for African nations to address the challenges facing women and children across the continent. Dr Fatima explained the critical connection between sustainable development and peace. She emphasised that women’s rights cannot be fully exercised in an unstable environment.
Additionally, the First Lady of Ghana, Lordina Mahama, stressed the importance of investing in girls’ education and supporting women artisans to build sustainable livelihoods.
