Climate finance expert Omotenioye Majekodunmi has been appointed as the new Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change, succeeding Dr. Nkiruka Madueke, who laid the Council’s institutional foundation.
Climate expert Omotenioye Majekodunmi has been appointed by President Bola Tinubu as the new Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), replacing Dr. Nkiruka Madueke, the pioneer DG of the Council.
Dr. Nkiruka, who was appointed in June 2024, is credited with laying the foundation for the agency’s institutional growth. Her tenure marked the Council’s initial strategic direction and structural development.
Omotenioye Majekodunmi, a seasoned climate finance expert and environmental lawyer, brings over 17 years of experience to her new role. Prior to this appointment, she served as the Financial Adviser to the Council, where she was instrumental in shaping the Council’s financial framework for climate initiatives.
Her appointment was confirmed in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga. The statement noted that the appointment aligns with President Tinubu’s broader climate action agenda.
President Tinubu also extended appreciation to the outgoing DG, Dr. Madueke, for her “dedicated service and strong foundation for the Council’s continued growth.”
Established under the Climate Change Act of 2021, the National Council on Climate Change serves as Nigeria’s apex body for coordinating national climate policies, implementing carbon budgeting, and mobilising green finance.
The African Green and Sustainability Institute (AGESI) expressed its support for Omotenioye Majekodunmi’s appointment, while also acknowledging Dr. Madueke’s contributions to the Council’s development.
