In a video going viral online, Chidiebere Onu, owner of a Lagos Island boutique, brutally orders the beating of ab employee over theft allegations. A video of the incident has sparked public outrage, with Nigerians calling for legal action against the perpetrators and condemning the abuse of power.
A man identified as Chidiebere Onu, owner of Don Maserati Classic Boutique, located at Ultimate Plaza on Broad Street, Lagos Island, has been condemned by Nigerians after orchestrating the brutal assault and molestation of a employee he alleged had stolen from him.
A video of the incident, which surfaced on January 12, 2024, and was posted by Sahara Reporters on X (formerly Twitter), shows the victim being viciously beaten with canes by two men in addition to Chidiebere himself. The 18-second clip has amassed over 622,000 views, sparking widespread outrage among Nigerians.
Social media users have condemned the assault, describing it as inhumane and unjustifiable. One user, @marypearl, expressed disbelief, tweeting, “This type of behaviour is utterly unacceptable. How do you, as a boss, treat any person, let alone your female employee, in such a violent and dehumanising manner? Mehnnn!!! I don tire for this world people.”
Another user, Theo Abu, called for accountability, writing, “I expect the authorities to take action against these barbarians. This is inhumane, callous, and cruel. If an employee steals from you, the right thing to do is to report him or her to the authorities, not take the law into your own hands. This should be condemned by all and sundry.”
The disturbing incident has reignited discussions about employers’ abuse of power and the need for stronger protections for employees, particularly women, in workplaces across Nigeria. Authorities have yet to issue a formal statement on the matter or confirm any ongoing investigations into the allegations.
