Summary
Over 1,000 pregnant women in Akamkpa, Cross River State, have received free antenatal kits through a collaborative grassroots health initiative led by the state government and key partners to improve maternal and child health outcomes.
In a major move to strengthen maternal and child healthcare at the grassroots level, more than 1,000 pregnant women have benefited from free antenatal kits in the Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The intervention is a collaborative initiative of the Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu; the First Lady, Dr Eyoanwan Bassey Otu; the Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency (CRSPHCDA); and the Akamkpa Local Government Council.
At the distribution ceremony held in Akamkpa, the Supervisor for Health, Mr Maurice Asengita, who represented the Council Chairperson Hon. Felix Akposi, handed over the kits to frontline health workers across the ten political wards of the LGA.
Describing the initiative as “a tangible expression of compassion and proactive leadership,” Maurice stated,
“This initiative demonstrates the Governor’s commitment to safeguarding maternal and child health at the grassroots. It is classical benevolence in action.”
He also extended gratitude to development partners such as Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) and CHAMPS for their continued support of the local health sector, describing their contributions as vital to the state’s ongoing healthcare renaissance.
The initiative aligns with the First Lady’s maternal health advocacy and Governor Otu’s “people-first” governance philosophy, both of which aim to reduce preventable maternal and infant deaths.
Ms. Agnes Itabang, Deputy Director of Health for Akamkpa LGA, applauded the state administration for prioritising maternal health. She emphasised that the antenatal kits would encourage early ANC visits and lead to better pregnancy outcomes.
“This is a major boost to our work,” Ms. Agnes said. “The kits will help ensure pregnant women receive the essential care they need. We’re sincerely thankful to the Otu-led administration for this laudable gesture.”
