Ruth Otabor, sister of Big Brother Naija winner Phyna, lost her left leg after being hit by a truck reportedly linked to the Dangote Group near Auchi Polytechnic. The Dangote Group confirmed the truck’s involvement and pledged full medical support and compensation for Ruth.
Ruth Otabor, younger sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner Ijeoma “Phyna” Otabor, has lost her left leg after being hit by a truck reportedly linked to the Dangote Group near Auchi Polytechnic. The crash has sparked outrage and calls for justice from her family and public figures.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck crushed Ruth’s left leg, which was later amputated at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital. Her right leg also remains at risk. The incident happened just six days after Ruth graduated from Auchi Polytechnic.
The truck driver fled the scene but was chased down and apprehended by a lecturer who witnessed the collision. The vehicle, now in police custody at Auchi police station, reportedly had its license plate removed.
Phyna took to social media to call out Aliko Dangote and his company for shielding the driver from justice.
“You told the Nigerian police to remove the plate number on the truck that crushed my sister… What happened to seeing my sister first?” she wrote on X.
She claimed that a planned visit from company representatives never materialised and warned against the release of the detained driver or vehicle.
Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw also joined the call for justice, claiming that attempts were being made to prevent the victim’s family and the school from accessing information about the vehicle.
“The truck is in the Auchi police station. The driver ran away but was chased down by a lecturer. They want to block access to the vehicle and details,” she posted on X.
In a statement issued on August 14, 2025, the Dangote Group confirmed the involvement of one of its trucks in the crash.
“Following the recent road accident in Auchi, Edo State, involving one of our trucks, which sadly resulted in injury to Ms. Ruth Otabor, we are ensuring full support for Ms. Otabor, including comprehensive medical care and appropriate compensation, in line with Dangote Group’s welfare policy,” the statement reads.
The company said senior officials and its insurance team had visited the scene, engaged with law enforcement, and met with Ruth and her family.
