Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has been inaugurated as Ghana’s Vice President, making history as the first woman to hold the position. The ceremony, held at Black Star Square in Accra, marked the beginning of her tenure alongside President John Dramani Mahama, following their National Democratic Congress (NDC) party’s victory in the December 7, 2024, elections.
The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, who administered the oath of office to Prof. Opoku-Agyemang. Her swearing-in was followed by that of President Mahama, succeeding Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and President Nana Akufo-Addo.

A distinguished academic and trailblazer in governance, Prof. Naana jane earned her Bachelor’s and Diploma in Education from the University of Cape Coast and her Master’s and PhD in English Literature from York University, Canada.
Her career milestones include serving as the first female vice chancellor of a public university in Ghana at the University of Cape Coast (2008). She entered politics in 2013 as Minister for Education under President Mahama and, in 2020, became the first woman nominated as a vice-presidential candidate by a major political party in Ghana.
