Abbott Elementary has received multiple major nominations at the 2025 Primetime Emmy Awards, with Quinta Brunson, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Janelle James earning recognition for their standout performances in the acclaimed ABC comedy.
Quinta Brunson, the creator and lead actress of Abbott Elementary, earned a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress. She was recognised for her role as Janine Teagues, a devoted and socially awkward second-grade teacher navigating life in an underfunded Philadelphia public school. This marks a significant follow-up to her historic 2023 Emmy win, where she became the first Black woman to win in the category since 1981.
She joins a competitive field this year, alongside fellow nominees including Uzo Aduba (The Residence) and Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), making the category one of the most diverse and anticipated of the season.
Veteran actress Sheryl Lee Ralph and comedian Janelle James also received nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress for their roles as Barbara Howard and Ava Coleman, respectively. Sheryl Lee, who won the award in 2022, and Janelle, now a four-time nominee, continue to earn recognition for their dynamic performances.
Additionally, Abbott Elementary secured a nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, with Quinta once again credited for her leadership on the writing team. This nomination ties her for the most writing Emmy nominations by a Black woman for a single television series.
Scheduled to take place on September 14, 2025 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards aim to celebrate and recognise excellence in television programming across the United States.
