The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has issued the Federal Government a 24-hour ultimatum and declared a five-day warning strike over unpaid allowances, salary arrears, and unresolved welfare issues.
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has given the Federal Government a fresh 24-hour ultimatum to meet its demands or face further industrial action.
This development follows an earlier 10-day ultimatum to government agencies and comes amid ongoing strikes by resident doctors in Abuja and Oyo State.
Their current demands include the immediate payment of the outstanding 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, settlement of five months’ arrears from the 25–35 per cent Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) review, and other pending salary backlogs.
They are also pressing for the payment of the 2024 accoutrement allowance arrears, prompt disbursement of specialist allowances, and restoration of recognition for the West African postgraduate membership certificates.
Other issues raised include calls for the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria to issue certificates to all qualified candidates, implementation of the 2024 CONMESS, resolution of welfare challenges in Kaduna State, and urgent attention to the plight of doctors at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso.
NARD President Dr. Tope Osundara said the decision followed a six-hour virtual National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on September 10. While acknowledging government promises, he insisted that immediate action was necessary.
The decision was confirmed in a statement issued by Agbor Affiong, General Secretary of the Association of Resident Doctors, Federal Capital Territory Administration, who noted that the strike resolution was reached after the NEC meeting, which extended into Sept. 11, 2025.
