Senator Ireti Kingibe has spoken on the abrupt mass demolition in Abuja, which has left many citizens in a frenzy.
In a statement released by the Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Ireti Kingibe, on Oct. 15, 2024, condemned the abrupt demolition of various properties of citizens across the FCT.
This comes after citizens protested the abrupt mass demolition of properties carried out in Oct. 2024 by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) under the leadership of Nyesom Wike.
Ireti, while speaking on this issue, stated that her primary responsibility is to advocate for the welfare, dignity and rights of residents of the FCT.
“While urban development and ensuring compliance with planning regulations are essential for a thriving capital city, it is equally critical that such actions adhere strictly to the principles of due process and fairness,” she said.
She further stated that it was important to be transparent and provide residents with proper notification and lawful procedures before carrying out any demolition exercise.
“Residents must be given ample opportunity to address concerns regarding their properties, ensuring that no one is unjustly displaced or denied their rights.”
Emphasising the importance of building trust among citizens, she urged the authorities involved to prioritise dialogue and follow an established framework while conducting the demolition.
“The FCT belongs to all Nigerians, and as such, governance here should reflect the highest standards of accountability and justice. I will continue to monitor these developments closely, engage relevant authorities, and advocate for policies that strike a balance between urban development and protecting the rights of all residents. My commitment remains to stand firmly for what is right and just for the people of the FCT,” she remarked.
