Summary
A Lagos court sentenced herbalist Segun Shina to 14 years in prison for attempted sexual assault on a 10-year-old girl with epilepsy, ordering his name to be added to the Sexual Offenders Register and his sentence to start from November 16, 2018.
Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on February 25, 2025, convicted and sentenced Segun Shina, a herbalist, to 14 years imprisonment for sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl suffering from epilepsy.
The court ordered that his name be registered in the Lagos State Sexual Offenders Register. He was sentenced after pleading guilty to an amended one-count charge of attempted sexual assault.
In his ruling, Justice Oshodi condemned Segun’s actions, stating,
“You exploited the child seeking help for epilepsy, and you also betrayed the trust placed on you as a traditional herbal healer.”
The judge acknowledged Segun’s plea for mercy and his lawyer’s allocutus but maintained that justice must be served, sentencing him to 14 years imprisonment, effective from November 16, 2018, the date of his arrest.
The court further directed Segun’s family to ensure his rehabilitation upon release.
Segun Shina was initially arraigned for rape on April 4, 2021, but pleaded not guilty. The Lagos State Government, represented by State Counsel Bukola Okeowo, presented two key witnesses, the survivor’s mother and an investigating police officer who provided compelling evidence and exhibits.
The survivor’s mother testified that she had taken her daughter to Shina for healing due to her epilepsy. The prosecution argued that his actions violated Section 262 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
The conviction marks another step in Lagos State’s commitment to justice for survivors of sexual abuse.
