DJ Switch has reacted to the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari with criticism of his legacy, describing his passing as “the sweet reality of inevitability.” She accused him of destroying Nigeria and said bad leaders are never mourned.

Nigerian disc jockey and activist, Obianuju Catherine Udeh, popularly known as DJ Switch, has reacted to the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on July 13, 2025, in London after a prolonged illness.

Former President Buhari, a former military general and head of state (1983–1985), returned to power in 2015 through democratic elections and served as Nigeria’s president until 2023. He remains notable in Nigerian political history as the first opposition candidate to defeat a sitting president.

Reacting to the news, DJ Switch took to her Instagram story to express satisfaction at his passing, writing,

“Wow! The sweet reality of inevitability. RIP MF. One down.”

In a follow-up post, she criticised Buhari’s legacy, stating:

“Please tell me what is Buhari’s achievement apart from destroying Nigeria? When you are a bad leader, people will drink to your demise, but when you lead with fairness, people will mourn when you die.”

Her comments have been interpreted as consistent with her long-standing stance against state violence and impunity. DJ Switch rose to national and international prominence during the 2020 #EndSARS protests, when she livestreamed the shooting of peaceful protesters by security forces at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos.

The footage, which contradicted the government’s claims, played a key role in drawing global attention to Nigeria’s human rights violations. Following the incident, DJ Switch reportedly fled the country due to threats to her safety and has since remained in Canada.

Meanwhile, tributes have continued to pour in following the former president’s death. The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, expressed her sorrow, stating that she had been unaware of Buhari’s illness and had wished him well earlier.
