Summary
a 42-year-old teacher named Gbolahan Osinusi has been apprehended for raping a minor for five years and forcing her to get multiple abortions.
A 42-year-old teacher, Gbolahan Osinusi, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for raping a girl in the Ketu-Epe area of Lagos State. Gbolahan, who also acted as the survivor’s guardian, reportedly began sexually abusing the girl when she was 12 years old and continued the abuse until December 2023, when she turned 17.
Police investigations revealed that Gbolahan took the girl to a nurse, Mariam Fatolu, on multiple occasions to administer abortion drugs whenever she became pregnant. According to Sahara Reporters, the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin stated that Gbolahan forced the victim to swear an oath of secrecy, threatening her with death if she told anyone about the abuse.
Hundeyin confirmed that Gbolahan was charged in court on Oct 16, 2024, while the nurse Mariam is currently receiving medical treatment at General Hospital, Ketu-Epe. She is to face charges as an accomplice for carrying out an abortion–on a minor.
The police statement noted: “On 30/09/24, a case of defilement and abortion was transferred from Festac Division to the Gender Unit of the Lagos State Police Command. The complainant alleged that Gbolahan Osinusi, a teacher and guardian, had been sexually abusing the survivor since she was 12 years old and forced her to undergo several abortions.”
Amidst investigations being carried out on the ongoing case, this topic has sparked outrage on social media after Sahara reporters made a post on it on X. “A teacher abusing a student for five years? This is beyond horrifying. Where are the safeguards to protect minors from such predators?” @Calipupslink tweeted.
“For rape apologists that always find ways to validate rape, she is not scantily dressed. She was in school! And she still got raped! It won’t be well with everyone that defends rape,” @homodasolar also stated.
In the past five years, there have been over 24,000 rape cases reported in Lagos. In 2022, the percentage of men who rape women increased to 65%. Naija Feminists Media has reported much of this male violence, including how police sergeant Ibrahim Uzuorbor raped a young girl at the police station.
