Nigeria's Junior Female Yellow Greens secured a historic two-run victory over New Zealand in their debut match at the 2025 ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup, overcoming challenges to achieve a remarkable win.
Nigeria’s U-19 cricket team, the Junior Female Yellow Greens, made history on January 20 by defeating cricket powerhouse New Zealand by two runs in their debut match at the 2025 ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Malaysia.
The thrilling encounter, held at the Borneo Cricket Ground, Sarawak, marked Nigeria’s first completed game in their maiden World Cup appearance, following a rainout in their opening match against Samoa.
Despite facing a two-hour delay due to wet conditions, the Nigerian Team showcased determination and skill. New Zealand, a test-playing nation, won the toss and elected to field in the rain-reduced 13-over match. Nigeria’s innings began shakily, but captain Lucky Piety delivered a standout performance, including the team’s first-ever World Cup six. Alongside contributions from Lilian Ude (19 runs) and a boundary off the final ball by Omosigho Eguakun, Nigeria set a target of 66 runs.
The Junior Female Yellow Greens then demonstrated grit with the ball. Peace Usen claimed Nigeria’s first World Cup wicket with the opening ball, running out Kate Irwin. This early breakthrough, coupled with dismissals of key players Emma McLeod, Eve Wolland, and Anika Todd, kept New Zealand under pressure.
New Zealand’s chase faltered further as Nigeria’s bowlers maintained composure. Lilian Ude’s near-perfect final over conceded just six runs and included a decisive run-out, sealing Nigeria’s dramatic victory.
The victory places Nigeria second in Group C with three points, behind leaders South Africa, who defeated Samoa to claim their second win. Nigeria and South Africa will face off on Wednesday to determine the group’s top spot and advance to the Super 6 stage.
