Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer Temilade Openiyi professionally known as Tems, has been awarded the best African music performance winner for her song “Love Me Jeje” The Recording Academy (the Grammys) announced the win via their live X (formerly Twitter) feed.

The announcement sparked excitement across Nigeria, with fans taking to social media to celebrate Tems’ historic win. One X user @TheAjibolaGrey tweeted, “Tems has 2 Grammys, 4 BET Awards, 2 American Music Awards.”


Tems was nominated in the category alongside Davido, Yemi Alade, Wizkid, Chris Brown, Burnaboy, and Asaake. With Tems becoming victorious, she has solidified her place in Nigerian music history with this second Grammy win at the 67th Academy Award. She made a speech by appreciating God for where she is appreciating her mother and wishing her a happy birthday.

“Dear God thank you so much for putting me on this stage and bringing me to this team tomorrow is my mum’s birthday and this is her first Grammy and I just want to thank you Mum because she has done a lot for me and my brother,” she said.

Tems received three nominations at this year’s Grammys, bringing her career total to eight. She was also nominated for Best Global Music Album (Born in the Wild) and Best R&B Song (Burning).
