Nigerian journalist Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu has been killed during a violent armed robbery at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja. The 29-year-old broadcaster, fondly known as Sommie, died in the early hours of September 29, 2025 .
In a statement on its official X handle, ARISE News confirmed the death of Somtochukwu, who worked as an anchor, reporter, and producer. The station described her as a respected journalist and a trusted face to viewers nationwide.
“Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident in her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police” the statement read.
ARISE News also highlighted her dual career as a journalist and lawyer, describing her as “a professional and supportive colleague and a friend to many.”
“We extend our deepest condolences to Sommie’s parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits,” ARISE News added.
Born on December 26, 1995, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu joined ARISE News as an anchor and producer, quickly becoming a recognisable and trusted presence on-air. Beyond journalism, she was also a trained lawyer, admired for her professionalism and dedication.

On August 14, 2025, just six weeks before the tragic armed robbery that claimed her life, the 29-year-old ARISE News anchor, reporter, and producer wrote on X:
“I pray from the depth of my heart that Nigeria never happens to me or anyone I care about.”
