Summary
President Donald Trump signed executive orders recognising only two genders, banning transgender males from women’s prisons and sports, and ending funding for gender ideology programmes to restore "biological truth" and defend women's rights.
President Donald Trump has signed a series of executive orders aimed at reinforcing an understanding of sex and ending the promotion of gender ideology within the U.S. government. One of the most significant orders mandates that the U.S. government recognise only two genders: male and female. It affirms that “sex” refers to an individual’s immutable biological classification and excludes the concept of “gender identity” from federal policies and documents.
Under the newly signed executive order titled Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government, key provisions have been introduced to ensure that sex-based distinctions are consistently applied across federal agencies. These provisions are designed to reinforce the recognition of only two sexes, male and female, and to eliminate any promotion of gender identity in official government actions.
One of the most significant aspects of this policy is the restriction on transgender males being housed in women’s prisons or detention centres. It mandates that all federal agencies cease promoting gender identity in official communications, ensuring that “male” and “female” remain the only acceptable terms in federal documentation. The policy includes a ban on transgender male athletes participating in women’s sports, reinforcing the government’s stance on biological sex as a defining factor in athletic competitions. This effort aims to keep men out of women’s sports.
Trump’s executive orders also target the termination of “radical” diversity, equity, and inclusion programmes, cutting federal funding for those that promote gender ideology. The orders are positioned to defend women’s rights, protect privacy in intimate spaces, and restore what Trump calls “biological truth” within federal government operations.
“Accordingly, my administration will defend women’s rights and protect freedom of conscience by using clear and accurate language and policies that recognise women are biologically female, and men are biologically male,” the policy stated.
This shift in policy is just one of several actions Donald Trump took on his first day in office, which also included signing measures aimed at delivering emergency price relief to American families, tackling the cost of living crisis, ending the weaponisation of the federal government, and withdrawing the U.S. from the World Health Organization (WHO). Donald Trump was inaugurated on January 20, 2025, where he was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States of America.
