Ms. Usoro Offiong Akpabio has been appointed as the Managing Director of the new South-South Development Commission. The appointment is part of efforts to boost the region’s development and infrastructure.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Ms. Usoro Offiong Akpabio as the Managing Director of the newly established South-South Development Commission (SSDC). The commission, created to drive development in Nigeria’s South-South region, is part of the President’s ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda to foster inclusive governance and regional growth.
Ms. Usoro Offiong is a political strategist from Akwa Ibom State, known for her grassroots development and policy planning background. Her appointment underscores the administration’s commitment to advancing infrastructure, economic empowerment, and sustainable development in the South-South zone.
She will be joined by Chibudom Nwuche, a former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives from Rivers State, who has been appointed chairperson of the SSDC. The Commission will have 18 board members and its headquarters in Uyo, Akwa Ibom’s capital.
President Tinubu’s nominations were in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which was read on the Senate floor during the plenary session. The President also requested the Senate’s confirmation of all appointees before they can formally assume office.
In the same communication, the President announced appointments for the North Central Development Commission (NCDC). Barrister Cyril Tsenyil was named Managing Director, while Cosmas Akiyir was appointed Chairperson. A total of 19 nominees have been put forward for the NCDC board.
The federal government created and staffed these regional development commissions to spread development more evenly across the country. The goal is to fix long-standing infrastructure and economic problems in different parts of Nigeria.
