Kannywood Veteran actress, Wasila Isma’il, passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at age 46 after a prolonged illness. Her death was announced by her ex-husband, Al-Amin Chiroma, through his Instagram handle. She died at the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) Hospital located in Kaduna State.
Wasila Isma’il was a prominent figure in the Hausa film industry, popularly known as Kannywood. She began her acting career in 1998 with the film “Jinin Masoya.” She became a household name across Northern Nigeria after playing the lead role in the 1999 movie ‘Wasila,’ directed by Yakubu Lere, alongside popular actor Ali Nuhu. Beyond acting, the Kannywood actress also worked as a broadcaster with Liberty Radio in Kaduna. She had her primary and secondary school certificates in Kaduna and later earned a diploma from Kaduna State Polytechnic.
Following news of her death, many of her colleagues and fans took to social media to mourn her. They shared tributes describing her as a talented actress whose contributions to the Hausa film industry would be remembered. The late actress is survived by her children.
