Summary
The Super Falcons of Nigeria began their 2024 WAFCON title quest with a 3–0 victory over Tunisia in their opening Group B match. The win places Nigeria at the top of the group as they aim for a record-extending 10th continental title.
The Super Falcons of Nigeria kicked off their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign in style, defeating Tunisia 3–0 in their opening Group B match on July 6, 2025.
Veteran striker Asisat Oshoala opened the scoring early, bundling in a fourth-minute goal after a low, in-swinging free-kick from Rinsola Babajide created chaos in the Tunisian penalty box. The nine-time champions maintained control throughout the first half, with Justine Madugu’s side dictating the tempo and creating several chances.
Rinsola doubled Nigeria’s lead just before the break with a well-placed strike moments after Deborah Abiodun had narrowly missed a chance to make it 2–0. Defender Ashleigh Plumptre also had a goal ruled out for a foul in the build-up.
At the start of the second half, Justine introduced fresh legs with Chinwendu Ihezuo, Christy Ucheibe, and Esther Okoronkwo coming on for Oshoala, Abiodun, and Babajide.
Nigeria continued their dominance, with Osinachi Ohale and Ashleigh threatening Tunisia’s defence. Substitute Chinwendu Ihezuo sealed the victory in the 84th minute, finishing off a precise cross from Ashleigh.
The result places Nigeria at the top of Group B, ahead of the other group fixture between Algeria and Botswana later on July 13, 2025.
With a clean sheet and strong team performance, the Super Falcons have made a bold statement as they seek a record-extending 10th WAFCON title. Nigeria will return to action on July 9, when they face Botswana in their second group-stage match.
