Women outshine male students as first-class graduates in UNILAG

Summary

UNILAG’s 55th convocation highlights remarkable achievements, including 18 all-female first-class graduates in Mass Communication, an award-winning Chemistry PhD thesis by Adetoun Alaba Akitoye, and the honorary degree conferment on Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. 

In the ongoing 55th convocation of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), 76 women out of 106 graduates graduated with irst-class honours degrees in various departments.

The convocation ceremonies, which started on Jan. 13 and are scheduled to run till Jan. 17, 2025, also produced 18 first-class graduates, which were all women, from the Department of Mass Communication for the 2023/2024 academic session. These exceptional students, celebrated for their hard work, dedication, and resilience, received their degrees at the first session of the convocation ceremony on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025.  

This event will also feature the conferment of an honorary Doctor of Science degree on Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization, in recognition of her global contributions to economic development and leadership.  

The graduating first-class students are Feranmi Abiola, Ahuruele Akani, Oyindamola Arikawe, Ifedayo Ayilaran, Demiladeogo Bankole, Olaide Bankole, Eniola Daramola, Faith Enang, Temiloluwa Igbinlade, Joy Imanah, Ifeoma Iwelunmor, and Chelsea Jegede. Others include Opeyemi Kareem, Eunice Obidi, Frances Odogu, Mofesola Olanrewaju, Funmilola Onabanjo, and Peace Onuoha. 

Among other notable recognitions, Adetoun Alaba Akitoye, a PhD graduate in Chemistry, was awarded the overall best PhD thesis for 2024. Her innovative research and academic contributions earned her the university’s top honour.
