On March 19, 2026, men in Ozoro, a community in Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, gangraped and assaulted women and girls on the streets and in their homes. This was done during the Uruamudhu Aluejo Festival, a seven-day cultural event in the community.
Videos circulating online show between 30 and 50 men surrounding and attempting to rape a single woman. In another video, men are seen removing a girl from a bike to rape her. Further videos show men actively hunting women on the streets and gangraping them. According to reports, female students of Southern Delta University of Science and Technology who were unaware of the tradition are among those being attacked.
“Girls in my community (Ozoro, Delta State) are currently getting molested and raped because of a sick tradition that says any woman who’s out from 12 noon today is allowed to get molested,” one witness @Tegsmamaa tweeted.
She described the men participating in the attacks as gleeful, with onlookers cheering and recording the assaults. “Women truly are not safe anywhere. Not even in communities that raised them,” she stated.
Before the attacks, the National Association of Yorùbá Students of Southern Delta University Ozoro issued an urgent safety notice warning all female students residing in and around the Oruamudhu community to remain indoors from 5:00 PM onwards and avoid unnecessary movement during the festival period.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, reacted to the incident, stating that the police are investigating it.
“This is alarming, disgusting and embarrassing. The CP has ordered an investigation into the incident. The command condemns this in totality; no custom or tradition is superior to the rights of citizens,” Bright said.
The Police Public Relations Officer added that the Commissioner of Police, Delta State CP Aina Adesola, urges Deltans to remain calm while assuring that those responsible for the attacks will be arrested and brought to justice.
