Summary: A US-based Nigerian doctor, Uzoma Nwaubani, died in Abia State after developing a medical emergency while participating in a free outreach organised by the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas.
A United States-based Nigerian doctor, Uzoma Nwaubani, has died in Abia State while participating in a free medical outreach. The incident occurred during a five-day medical mission held from April 13 to 17, 2026, organised by the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas.
According to a statement signed by Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, Dr Uzoma developed a medical emergency during the outreach and was rushed to a hospital, where she died despite efforts by a medical team to resuscitate her. The late doctor had returned from the United States with her husband, a native of Abia State and their daughter, a final-year medical student, to offer free medical services to residents as part of the outreach.
Governor Otti expressed shock over her death, describing her as a compassionate and dedicated medical practitioner who volunteered her expertise for the benefit of others.
“She had returned from the United States with her husband and daughter to offer her medical expertise free of charge to citizens of our dear state, a sacrifice that marks her out as an exemplary professional,” the governor said.
He extended his condolences to her family and the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas, and commended her family for allowing the outreach programme to continue despite the loss.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising the health and well-being of residents in the state.
