A grieving mother has publicly accused a hospital in Bayelsa State of negligence, noting that lapses in care led to the death of her 13-year-old daughter on April 6, 2026.
The incident reportedly occurred at a medical facility in Okolobiri, an area known for housing the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital. The mother claimed that her daughter was left unattended for hours despite repeatedly crying out for help.
In a video that has since circulated online, the woman expressed deep anguish and wept bitterly that healthcare workers failed to provide timely and adequate medical attention.
“The government should look into the healthcare system in Nigeria; it has failed. The healthcare system in Bayelsa State failed me. I lost my 13-year-old daughter on the 6th of April, 2026,” she said.
She further described her daughter as her best friend, gossip partner and companion, adding that the teenager cried for hours asking for help before her condition worsened. The mother directly accused the hospital of responsibility for her child’s death, intensifying calls for accountability.
The incident has sparked emotional reactions online, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the girl’s death and the standard of care provided at the facility.
On X (formerly Twitter), a user, @ann_omatf, wrote, “Cases like this must not be ignored if real change is expected.”
Another user, @Hadebammy, described the incident as “heartbreaking,” adding that no parent should have to bury a child due to systemic failure. The user warned that poor healthcare puts lives at risk and urged the government to act urgently with accountability, funding and reforms.
Authorities in Bayelsa State had yet to issue an official statement at the time of reporting.
