Another week, another reminder on the things women were up against: A six year old girl was raped by a man who was supposed to be teaching her, a 15 year old was allegedly held captive and sexually assaulted and an Austrian woman was drugged and raped by dozens of men until she died. Elsewhere, women faced discrimination for having albinism, misinformation turned women with alopecia into the subject of a cruel viral lie, while others continued pushing for better healthcare, reproductive freedom and economic independence. We also looked back at Gloria Steinem’s place in feminist journalism and covered women taking up space in leadership. Here’s what happened this week.

The First Lady of Bauchi State, Aishatu Bala Mohammed, has commissioned a newly constructed National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) complex at the Bauchi State Specialist Hospital to expand access to healthcare, particularly for women and children.
- Video of bald women’s gala falsely captioned as “club of widows under 50”
Claim: An X user shared a video of bald women dancing at a gala, claiming they are a “club of widows” all under 50 years of age who shaved their heads as a widowhood requirement. Verdict: False. The footage shows attendees of Baldie Con, a U.S. nonprofit conference for women who are bald due to alopecia, lupus, cancer treatment, or personal choice. The same clip has circulated online since at least January 2025, recaptioned each time with a different false or degrading claim.

A 31-year-old serving National Youth Service Corps member and teacher at a private school off Jakpa Road in Delta State has been arraigned before High Court 1 in Effurun and remanded at Warri Correctional Centre after raping a 6-year-old girl on three separate occasions within the school premises.

- Femicide: Robert Aichinger drugs wife, arranges 72 men to rape her to death
Robert Aichinger, A 51-year-old Austrian man is being held in pre-trial detention after sexually abusing his wife while she was heavily intoxicated and unable to defend herself, leaving her with fatal injuries. Another man is also in custody after investigators found that he had sexually abused the woman in the same state. The woman was found on June 26 with severe bleeding. Emergency responders attempted to save her, but she died at the scene. An autopsy later established that her death was caused by severe injuries to her lower abdomen and blood loss.
