On June 15, 2026, an Oslo District Court sentenced Marius Borg Høiby, the eldest son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit, to four years in prison after convicting him of two counts of rape.
Marius is the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit from a relationship before her marriage to Crown Prince Haakon, the heir to Norway’s throne, and he grew up in the royal household with the future king. He holds no royal title and has no official duties.
He had been charged with sexually assaulting four women who were asleep between 2018 and 2024, alongside other charges including assault, drug-related offences, and violations of a restraining order.
Judge Jon Sverdrup Efjestad stated that the court found it proven that one of the women was not able to resist Marius, in relation to a rape that took place at the crown prince’s home.
He was also convicted of assault and abuse in close relationships and was ordered to pay compensation to the victims. The court acquitted him of the remaining two rape counts he faced, out of 40 total charges from a six-week trial. He had denied the rape allegations but admitted to several of the lesser offences.
Oslo state attorney Sturla Henriksbø described the verdict as a victory for the justice system, stating that it shows no one is beyond the law, regardless of who they are or who they are related to.
