The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has conferred chieftaincy on Convicted Child Sexual Offender Olanrewaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha.

The title comes less than a year after the actor was released from prison following a conviction for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl, and foster daughter of comedian Princess, in April 2021.

Baba Ijesha was sentenced to 16 years in prison for the molestation, but the sentence was later reduced on appeal. In November 2025, he was released after serving more than three years in custody.

On July 2, 2026, the registered sex offender announced on Facebook that he has been honoured with the chieftaincy title Baba Awada Konge Oduwa. Ile Ife, Ile Oodua!”

The position has sparked widespread public outrage, with critics condemning the Oba for honouring a convicted child sexual abuser.

I never see king wey useless reach this shameless ooni. Two stupid birds of the same feather,” @itislakesyd said.

“There is nothing you won’t see in Nigeria. Is this not the same person that was jailed for years?” @AugustaMedVA said.

“Giving a chieftaincy title and a brand-new car to an ex-convict who was literally jailed for child sexual abuse tells you everything you need to know about our traditional institutions. The Ooni of Ife is showing the world that values don’t matter as long as you have connections,” @od_manuel said.

I know this guy has to move on at a point, but should a first-class traditional leader encourage a convicted sex offender?  @CloutPatra questioned.
