Ifeanyi Chukwu Joseph, a 26-year-old man, is now facing a murder allegation in Imo State after police suspected that he pushed 17-year-old Chiamaka Chukwuokore from a two-storey building.

The incident occurred around 1 pm on Sunday, 1 November 2026, along Mbonu Ejike Street in Ikeneagbu, Owerri. Joseph, the alleged boyfriend of the teenager’s aunt, was alone in the residence with the girl at the time, after his girlfriend had travelled. An alleged altercation took place. Police state that Joseph then pushed Chiamaka from the building. She sustained serious injuries, including trauma affecting her brain, and was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

An angry mob gathered and attempted to lynch Joseph immediately afterwards. Police operatives intervened, rescued him, and took him into custody. He has remained in detention since.

Chiamaka died on the evening of Tuesday, 3 November 2026, while receiving treatment. Following her death, the Imo State Police Command upgraded the case against Joseph to a murder allegation. DSP Henry Okoye, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances. Commissioner of Police Audu Bosso has said a thorough probe is underway.

Joseph’s account to investigators, according to reporting, claimed an argument arose after he accused the teenager of bringing men into the house and that he had flogged her before the fall. Police described his version as fishy and inconclusive. Separate claims circulating on social media allege the confrontation followed rejected sexual advances; these remain unverified by official statements, which refer to an altercation.

Joseph remains in police custody as the murder investigation continues. Authorities have urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information as the case proceeds.
