Nigeria’s Paralympians showcased their talent and determination at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, winning multiple medals across various events. The Paralympics, which started on August 28, 2024, will end on September 8, with 184 participating countries and around 4,400 athletes competing across 22 sports.

During the sport, Folashade Oluwafemiayo won gold in the women’s over 86kg category by breaking an eight-year-old world record with a lift of 161kg, while Bolaji Eniola and Chigozie Nnanna progressed to the quarterfinals in badminton after winning their second game on August 31, 2024. Bolaji Eniola went on to win Nigeria’s first bronze medal in Paralympic badminton.

“Nigerian women have faced numerous challenges in gaining recognition and support in sports, but their performances at the Paralympics demonstrate their unwavering dedication and talent,” said Dr Ijeoma Okonkwo, a sports analyst. “These achievements are not just about winning medals; they signify the breaking of barriers and the promise of a brighter future for women in Nigerian sports.”

Nigeria’s journey in the Paralympics began in 1992. Since then, the country has consistently produced world-class athletes, including pioneers like Lucy Ejike, who has inspired many young athletes. However, Nigerian women in sports have faced significant hurdles, including limited access to training facilities, inadequate funding, and societal expectations. Despite these challenges, they have excelled globally, often outshining their male counterparts in various disciplines.

“We must build on this momentum,” said Ngozi Okafor, a gender equality advocate. “The future of Nigerian sports is bright, and our women are leading the way. It’s time to give them the support they need to reach even greater heights.”
