Summary

AdvoKC Foundation has launched a petition urging the Edo State Government to honour its campaign promise of giving 35% of cabinet positions to women. This call follows the confirmation of eight male commissioners, which falls short of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s pledge on women’s inclusion.

Advocacy group, AdvoKC Foundation, has launched a petition urging the Edo State Government to fulfil its campaign promise of allocating 35 per cent of cabinet positions to women.

The call comes after the Edo State House of Assembly confirmed eight new male commissioners on August 20, 2025, a development which falls short of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s pledge of women inclusion and representation in leadership.

AdvoKC Foundation for Promotion of Good Governance and Accountability in Nigeria is a youth-led nonpartisan organisation committed to bringing truth to politics in Nigeria. The foundation works to ensure that promises made by elected officials, particularly those concerning women’s political participation, are tracked and enforced.

In a statement, AdvoKC expressed disappointment over the cabinet’s composition, describing it as a setback for women’s representation in governance. The group emphasised that gender parity in leadership is not just a matter of justice but also one of effective governance.

“During the electoral campaign, Your Excellency pledged that 35 per cent of cabinet positions would be allocated to women. This well-received commitment generated significant hope among the people of Edo State, especially women, who anticipated a government reflecting inclusivity,” the group stated.

AdvoKC stressed that diverse leadership enriches decision-making and strengthens democracy, urging the Governor to revisit the appointments and honour his commitment.

“This action would not only honour your campaign pledge but also renew public faith in the integrity of electoral commitments and demonstrate a genuine commitment to empowering all segments of society.”

The organisation called on citizens to sign its petition in solidarity, advocating for the equitable representation of women in the Edo State cabinet.
