Australia has announced the appointment of Lieutenant General Susan Coyle as its next Chief of Army. Currently serving as Chief of Joint Capabilities within the Australian Defence Force, she is set to assume office in July 2026, according to a government statement released on April 13, 2026. She will succeed Simon Stuart, who has held the position since July 2022.

With a military career spanning nearly four decades, Susan enlisted in 1987 and has held several senior command roles across multiple operational theatres, including deployments in Afghanistan, the Middle East, and the Solomon Islands. Her experience also extends to emerging areas of modern warfare, such as cyber operations and joint capability development.

Her appointment represents a significant milestone not only for the Australian Army but also for the broader defence establishment, as she becomes the first woman to lead the army in its 125-year history and any service branch within the Australian Defence Force.

The leadership change comes amid ongoing efforts by the Australian military to increase female representation in its ranks and leadership. It also follows heightened scrutiny over gender-related issues within the force, including reports of systemic sexual harassment and discrimination.

In October 2025, a class action lawsuit was filed against the defence force, accusing it of failing to protect thousands of female personnel from sexual assault, harassment, and discrimination.
