China has defended Nigeria’s sovereignty following a threat of military action by U.S. President Donald Trump, calling for global respect for Nigeria’s independence. The Chinese government also warned against foreign interference under the pretext of religion or human rights.
China has issued a strong call for global respect of Nigeria’s sovereignty following recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened potential military action against the country.
In a statement released on November 4, 2025, China reaffirmed its support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, commending Nigeria for pursuing a development path aligned with its national realities.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks during a regular press briefing, as confirmed by the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria via a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“As a comprehensive strategic partner of Nigeria, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people on a development path that fits Nigeria’s national realities,” Mao Ning stated.
Mao further warned against using issues such as religion or human rights as pretexts for foreign interference. “We oppose any country’s interference in other countries’ internal affairs under the pretext of religion and human rights. We oppose the wanton threat of sanction and use of force,” she added.
President Trump’s comments, made on his Truth Social platform on November 1, 2025, have drawn global attention. He claimed to have instructed the Pentagon to draft a potential plan of attack against Nigeria, alleging that Christianity was “facing an existential threat” in the country.
In his post, Trump said that if Nigeria failed to stop the killings, the United States would “attack fast, viciously, and sweetly, just like the terrorist thugs attack our cherished Christians.” He also called on members of the U.S. Congress, including Congressperson Riley Moore and House Appropriations Committee Chair Tom Cole, to investigate the matter and prepare for possible intervention.
In response, President Bola Tinubu dismissed allegations of a religious divide in Nigeria, emphasising that his administration has maintained inclusive engagement with all faiths since taking office in 2023.
