Renowned Nigerian businesswoman and philanthropist, Folorunso Alakija, has completed and donated a N34 billion ultra-modern medical research and training hospital to Osun State University (UNIOSUN). The donation is one of the most significant private investments in healthcare and medical education in Nigeria’s history.
The facility, named the Modupe and Folorunso Alakija Medical Research and Training Hospital, was officially commissioned on December 16, 2025, by former Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo at a ceremony attended by government officials, university authorities, medical professionals, and other key stakeholders.
Designed as a world-class centre for medical research, specialist treatment, and clinical training, the hospital has a 250-bed capacity and houses 20 clinical departments and five non-clinical departments. It also includes a community health unit, maternity and neonatal care services, research and diagnostic laboratories, and four fully equipped, state-of-the-art operating theatres.
Additional facilities include advanced diagnostic imaging equipment such as CT scan, MRI, ultrasound, and X-ray machines, radiotherapy suites, 16 intensive care units (ICUs), an ophthalmology unit, and several specialised medical and support services aimed at improving healthcare delivery and research outcomes.
Speaking at the commissioning, Folorunso said the donation was driven by her commitment to improving access to quality healthcare and supporting the training of future medical professionals in Nigeria. She noted that the hospital would serve as a centre of excellence for advanced care, research, and capacity building, while helping to reduce medical tourism abroad.
The donation will boost UNIOSUN’s College of Health Sciences, making it a leading centre for medical training and research in Nigeria and West Africa, while improving healthcare access for locals.
