A video of DSS officials trying to gain forceful access into the Lagos state House of Assembly has been trending on Twitter. The Department of State Service (DSS) allegedly sealed the speaker and deputy speakers’ offices and tried to access the red chambers while the members were sitting. Sources claim that Speaker Mojisola Meranda who resumed office a month ago after the impeachment of the former speaker has refused to bow to pressure to resign from her position as speaker.
Many Nigerians have condemned the act calling for the federal government to intervene and save the state from plunging into anarchy. Political figures such as Atiku Abubakar, former vice president of Nigeria and presidential candidate of the People Democratic Party (PDP), Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour the Labour Party flag bearer for the last Lagos state gubernatorial elections, condemn the act on his Twitter page.
“Reports of armed DSS officials storming and sealing the office of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda and the alleged militarization of the Assembly complex at Alausa are deeply troubling,” he said.
Amidst the conflict, 36 present lawmakers reaffirmed their confidence in her strength and leadership by passing a unanimous Vote of Confidence for their colleague Ms Mojisola to continue her duties as speaker of the Lagos state House of Assembly. The speaker keeps chanting “Madam Speaker” in the viral video as they adjourn.
