The National Council for Women societies, Kebbi State branch, has raised alarm and concerns over the surge of girls hawking on the street in the State.
Describing the situation as worrisome and an easy platform for child prostitution and child labour, the President of the State Council, Hajia Hadiza, pointed out that the council has made efforts to curtail the menace.
“In the process of hawking in the streets, minors and matured girls are exposed to rape, paid early for sex and other forms of unsavory behaviours all in the name of assisting their parents cushion their financial obligations,” she said.
The council called for stringent measures against the menace from the State House Assembly.
Street hawking increases girls’ vulnerability to various forms of abuse and exploitation from predatory men, hinders their education and affects their overall well-being.
