In commemoration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day, celebrated annually on June 12, the Naija Feminists Media (NFM) will host a Twitter discussion on: Making a Democratic Nigeria Work for Women. The virtual event will be held on Friday, June 13, 2025, at 5 pm.
Democracy Day is a national public holiday that marks the restoration of democratic governance in Nigeria in 1999 and commemorates the landmark general election held on June 12, 1993. This year, NFM aims to spotlight women’s realities in Nigeria’s democratic process and explore solutions for greater inclusion and justice.
The dialogue will feature women who are actively leading change in politics, media, and activism, such as Kosisochukwu Charity Ani, Founder of MyselfDefense NG; Tinuade Mary, Executive Director of Women Too Africa; and Ms. Favour Eboatu, National Coordinator of the Reachout Initiative for Vulnerable African Women.
Other speakers include Aworanti Salvation Grace, Founder of Voices Against Rape and Sexual Harassment Foundation; Iwagun Temitope Faith, Political Leader and President of Progressive Young Women Forum; and Omolola Pedro, a journalist, fact-checker, and political activist.
The conversation will centre on how Nigeria’s democratic structures and institutions can become more inclusive, equitable, and supportive of women’s rights, leadership, and empowerment. The event will highlight the need to centre women’s voices within the country’s political systems and examine what true democratic participation should look like for women across sectors.
The virtual convergence aims to spark important conversations on making Nigeria’s democracy more inclusive and supportive of women.
