Popular Nigerian Rapper Darkoo has called out Mr P of P-Square for taking down her “Focus On Me” music video for six days, despite proper clearance, claiming his actions disrupted her project.
Popular rapper, singer, and songwriter Darkoo has taken to X to address actions by Peter Okoye, known as Mr P of the Nigerian music group P-Square. She claims his actions disrupted her latest music project, including taking down the video of her newly released song ‘Focus On Me’ on YouTube.
The video of the new jam “Focus on Me (All the Sexy Girls in the Club)” was sampled from P-Square’s hit song “Gimme Dat” in 2009.
In a series of posts on Saturday, Darkoo expressed her frustration over the ordeal, claiming that her music video was removed for six days due to actions instigated by Mr P.
“I wasn’t going to say anything, but my music video was taken down for 6 days by Peter of P-Square in an attempt to completely sabotage the song,” she wrote.
Darkoo clarified that she had obtained all the necessary clearances for the song’s sample, emphasising her experience in handling such matters.
She further explained that the issue escalated due to Mr P’s personal demands. Although P-Square was already receiving 50% royalties from the song, Mr P insisted on being featured on the track and even created a verse for it.
“He told me not to speak to or clear with his brothers Jude and Paul (who, by the way, have been incredibly helpful in resolving issues). He claimed they would bring ‘unnecessary problems’ for me,” she stated.
The singer also claimed that Mr P took down her video out of anger rather than any contractual or copyright concerns. She described the emotional toll the incident has taken on her, lamenting how the actions affected her hard work, her fans, and the resources invested in the project.
“It’s heartbreaking because I grew up admiring him, and to see someone I once looked up to actively try to hurt me and block my success is incredibly painful,” she shared.
Darkoo reaffirmed that she followed due process in handling the rights and clearances for the track.
“For the record: I had the clearance, the contracts, and the paperwork from P-Square. I went above and beyond to make sure their rights were respected and that this was handled correctly with the right people.”
Concluding her post, she expressed disappointment in how the situation unfolded, stating, “This isn’t how our OGs are supposed to be moving. It’s sad and disappointing.”
At the time of writing, Mr P has not publicly responded to the claims. However, Darkoo confirmed that the music video has now been restored.
