Nigerian singers Tems and Yemi Alade have received Grammy nominations for the 67th annual ceremony, as revealed on Nov. 8, 2024.
The Grammy Awards recognise outstanding achievements in the music industry, with nominees across various categories highlighting specific contributions to recording; from these nominees, a winner is chosen in each category.
In this year’s nomination, Tems leads the Nigerian nominees with three nominations: Best R&B Song for Burning, Best African Music Performance for Love Me JeJe, and Best Global Music Album for Born in the Wind.
The talented singer, songwriter, and record producer’s rise continues after her Grammy win for contributing to Future’s hit Wait For U and becoming the first African to receive Billboard’s Women in Music Award (Breakthrough category) in March 2024.
She also co-wrote Rihanna’s Lift Me Up, earning her multiple nominations, including the Academy Award for Best Original Song, the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song and the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media.
Yemi Alade is nominated for Best African Music Performance for her track Tomorrow, making it her first Grammy nod. This adds to her milestone as the first Nigerian female artist and second Nigerian Afrobeats artist to reach 100 million views on YouTube for a single video after Davido.
The talented singer, songwriter, actress and activist made history as the first female artist to win the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) for Best Female twice in a row, in 2015 and 2016 and was nominated for Artiste of the Year 2015.
She was also the first African female nominated for the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) and received nominations for the BET Awards’ Best International Act. Yemi Alade also won The Headies Award for Best Performer in 2018 and 2019, becoming the inaugural recipient when the category was introduced in 2018.
The upcoming Grammy ceremony, set for Feb. 2 at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena, will celebrate recordings released between Sept. 16, 2023, and Aug 30, 2024.
